"Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's
Released in May of 2006, "Hey There Delilah" is a romantic, acoustic guitar ballad written by the lead singer of the "Plain White T's," Tom Higgenson, and is about a girl and a boy in a long distance relationship and their longing for one another.
The song speaks about how beautiful Delilah is to Tom, and how she makes him feel an overwhelming, blissful feeling of love despite being a thousand miles apart. He promises that he'll become a famous artist, visit her as often as he can, and eventually move to live together with her.
The first verse starts off with lyrics sounding like the start to a letter, asking Delilah what is it like in New York City. Then, Tom compliments her by saying that she looks beautiful, and states that Times Square couldn't shine as bright as she does. The verse ends with Tom expressing that if Delilah ever starts feeling lonely, she should play the song he's written to her, for her to close her eyes and imagine that he is with her, singing it to her. Tom, in a very poetic way, compares his voice to a disguise that masks the distance between the both of them. He states that every time Delilah hears his voice on the song, he hopes it makes her feel as if he's right there, next to her. It's a very romantic way to end the first verse and transition into the very catchy chorus of the song.
The chorus repeats the lyrics "Oh, it's what you do to me".
In my opinion, "what you do to me" relates to the way Delilah affects Tom and how she makes him feel, both in a positive and negative way. She makes him feel love and happiness, and gives him motivation to work harder and focus on his dream so that they could be together one day. At the same time he feels the loneliness that accompanies one when being in a long distance relationship, as well as the painful desire he has to see her, wishing that he'd be able to be with her in person.
However, in the second verse of the song Tom reassures the girl that, no matter the distance they have between them or the difficulties they might face being in a long distance relationship, one day he is going to achieve his dream of becoming a successful musician and, with his newfound fame, he will able to support the both of them, allowing them to finally live together. Tom promises Delilah that he is going to work hard so that one day he can provide them the life they always wished they had together. He finishes the second verse saying that he has so much left to say to her, claiming that if every song he'd write to her would take her breath away, make her feel safe, loved and happy, he'd write them constantly. It is a nice sentiment to end the verse on and transition into the same chorus once again.
Following the second chorus is the bridge section. On the bridge of the song, Tom provides solutions for the distance they have by listing traveling by plane, trains and cars. He also expresses that if there was no other way to go and see her, he'd walk a thousand miles just to do so, emphasizing that he would work hard and do anything to be with her. He also says that their love is one of a kind in the world and claims that no one else in the world could feel the same way that they do. The bridge then transitions into the final verse of the song.
In the last verse, Tom asks Delilah to be good and not to miss him too much while they're apart, reminding her that, in two years time, she will be done with school and that Tom will be the famous artist he always dreamed of being. Delilah, being done with her studies, will have a lot of free time, and with Tom's success, he'll have the funds to finally be able to support them living together and to do everything they've always dreamed of doing. After the final verse follows the chorus and the song ends on an extended final chord.
Being in a long distance relationship myself, I can relate to this song very much, which is why I decided to write about it.
The feeling of wishing to see your significant other, and being willing to work hard to achieve that goal is very familiar to me. As a result, this song has a strong emotional connection with me and, because of that, it has become one of my favorite songs of all time.
